Homemade Popsicle | Increasing Fiber in take for Toddlers
Our daughter has been having problems pooping.
She had an experience where the poop was so hard for her to push and when it came out, it was painful for her. That experience traumatised her and since then, she's been holding in her poop for as long as she can.
The beginning of this journey wasn't exactly easy. It isn't a happy sight to see your little one struggling to poop and cry about it. So we we're very determined to do something about it. Her pediatrician has been very empathetic about her whole ordeal and really has a way of making us, the parents, feel that there's always something we can do about it. We've made use of laxatives, which has worked greatly but was for a limited time only, so now we've been feeding her - rich in Fiber foods as this helps soften the stool and helps pass it out, less painfully.
Now, it seems she still does hold her poop when she can, but gladly, it's gotten better. So this phase isn't done yet for us. But, with this experience, I can say we've managed to find great ways to get Fiber into her, in a "toddler friendly" way - one of which is giving her berries, which are high in fiber, in the form of a popsicle!
Because she loves to eat ice cream and popsicles, I thought, hey, why not get these in that form so she can enjoy it. And what's great is that you can make variations of these. So we've done yoghurt berry popsicles, Pineapple and apple, Mixed Fruits, Fruit Juice, and all sorts of popsicles. You can even get some greens in it too! And no added sugar and that's not the best part! What I find absolutely great about this is that all you need to do to "prep" is really Freeze then blend!
All you need is a good blender, a popsicle mold, and your fruits/ingredients of choice.
Have a look at the vlog below for when I made a mixed berry popsicle :)
Here are other ways and Foods that we've done for Fiber in-take for our almost 3 year old :
Switched Bread to High Fiber Bread
If you live in Cebu, you'll find this in SnR
Switching Regular pasta to Whole Wheat Pasta
Letting her drink Fruit Juices such as, Pineapple, Apple, Beet Root, Cranberry, etc.
And sometimes mixing these :)
Switched her usual cereals to whole wheat cereals or cereals that are high in fiber
This can be a hit or miss, as some of these cereals don't taste quite good. But there definitely are some that taste great!
Have you experienced something similar with your little one?
